A pond changes how you use a property. Done right, it stores water for livestock and irrigation, draws wildlife, gives kids somewhere to fish, and doubles as a fire suppression source for you and your neighbors. Done wrong, it leaks, silts in fast, or floods where it should not.
We have been working North Idaho ground since the 1990s. We know the soils, the slopes, and the seasonal water table here. When we put in a pond, we plan for the long version, not just the dig.
Ponds We Build
Stock and Livestock Ponds
A reliable water source for cattle, horses, sheep, and other livestock. Sized to your herd and your dry season.
Irrigation Ponds
Storage for pasture, garden, orchard, or hayfield irrigation. Often paired with a pump and pipe system you already have planned.
Recreation Ponds
Fishing ponds, swim ponds, and family ponds shaped to fit the land and the view from the house. We can plan for stocking and aeration access.
Wildlife and Duck Ponds
Smaller ponds and seasonal water features designed to draw waterfowl and game. A real asset on hunting properties.
Fire Suppression Ponds
A standing water source for property defense and rural fire response. Increasingly important on forested acreage in the Idaho Panhandle.
Our Pond Building Process
1. Free Site Review
We walk the property with you, look at where water already wants to go, check soil and drainage, and talk through how you want to use the pond.
2. Plan and Layout
We mark out shape, depth, dam location if needed, and overflow. We figure out where the excavated dirt is going before we start digging.
3. Excavation
We bring our own equipment and crew. Most residential ponds are a one to three week job depending on size, soil, and finish work.
4. Dirt Management
This is the part most pond contractors gloss over. Every pond site is different. Depending on where you are digging, what comes out could be topsoil, clay, gravel, or a mix. We talk through that with you before we start so you know what to expect. Whatever comes out, we figure out the best use for it on your property first — building up a berm, leveling a pad, filling low spots — and haul out what you do not want. You are not paying us to dump material somewhere it does not belong.
5. Finishing
Slope shaping, seeding banks, access path, and any rock or armoring needed at the inflow and overflow.
Why Northwest Logging Co.
We are not a one trick pond company. We are a working forestry and excavation operation that has been clearing, thinning, logging, and shaping North Idaho property since the 1990s. That matters for ponds because:
We own and run our own equipment. No subcontracting the dig.
We know what to do with the dirt. The black topsoil that comes out of a pond is the same soil we already sell to gardeners and landscapers. Nothing gets wasted.
We can package the work. Many pond projects also need access road work, brush clearing, or selective tree removal around the site. We can do all of it in one mobilization, which usually saves money.
We are local and we will be back. Tom Schneider answers the phone. If something needs adjusting next year after the first wet season, you are calling the same guy who dug it.

Ready to Build a Pond on Your Property?
Most pond projects start with a 30 minute walk on the land. We will tell you straight whether the site you have in mind will hold water, what size pond it will support, and roughly what it will take to build it.
